We celebrate our Olympians

Inside this issue:

Rio Taekwondo

Very many congratulations to Safwan Khalil, Hayder Shkara, Caroline Marton and Carmen Marton, plus their Coaches Ali Khalil and Alf Dell’Orso on their performances in Rio.  While the results may not have been all that they wanted, they represented Australia with pride and good sportsmanship.

Safwan was 7th overall after a great win against Belgian Ketbi, he then lost in a close contest to Hanprab of Thailand, who went on to win the Silver Medal. The repechage then saw Safwan again lose narrowly to Kim from Korea.

Caroline had a very tough draw going down in a very close contest to Glasnovic from Sweden.

Hayder started against the favoured British athlete Lulato, but unfortunately he was gapped by the eventual Silver Medallist. Hayder then stepped up in the repechage to lose by a Golden Point to five time Olympian and dual Gold Medallist Lopez from the USA.

For the second time Carmen had to fight Tatur from Turkey.  Again another close contest with no points in the first two rounds which eventually saw Carmen lose to Tatur.

If you have been inspired by watching Taekwondo in Rio, and would like to join in please see the Find a Club feature on our website to find the nearest Taekwondo Club to you.

The Paralympics start on September 8, while Taekwondo will not be featured in 2016, it will make its Paralympic debut in 2020 in Tokyo.  If you would like to find out more please contact para-tkd@austkd.com.au for more information.

All The Best For The Future

Carmen Marton and Safwan Khalil have indicated that they will be retiring from international competition, but will remain involved in Taekwondo because they wish to give something back to the community.

At Sports Taekwondo Australia we wish them all the very best with their future endeavours, and we looking forward to working with them to ensure that their significant contributions to the Australian Taekwondo community can continue.

Poomsae Coaches

In the last Issue we mistakenly listed Greg Butterworth as the appointed Lead Coach for the 2016 Oceania Championships Poomsae Team.

The Coaches for Oceania are yet to have their selection finalised and we apologise for the error.
