Treating the ‘Sleeping Giants’ of Poly- and Perfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS)

The ability of activated carbon to bind up Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in soil and water is well proven, but it does not bind the shorter chain PFAS compounds; and these compounds may end up being the ‘sleeping giants’ in terms of risk to human health and the environment.

This has led to the design of positively charged ion exchange resins that bind to the negatively charged head of these shorter chain PFAS compounds. Although relatively expensive, these resins show good promise in addressing the challenge of binding shorter chain PFAS compounds.

Ziltek has taken a double-pronged approach to this challenge; its RemBind Plus product contains activated carbon and aluminium hydroxide, a positively charged mineral, with a strong anion exchange capacity. This is where the product comes into its own – the powerful combination of ingredients means that RemBind Plus can bind all of the major PFAS compounds. Click here for a recent article published in the Global Water Intelligence Magazine.

Watch this space in 2017 for the launch of our 2nd generation RemBind Plus products which will have increased reactivity, further reducing the amount of product that needs to be used for PFAS treatment in both soil and water.

NutriBind™ and TersOx™ now available in Australia through Ziltek

Ziltek is offering two new products from its partnership with US partner Tersus Environmental to the Australian market.

NutriBind™ - this powdered product has a dual function; It immediately binds and immobilizes organic contaminants in soil and groundwater, quickly removing them from the mobile phase. The high surface area provides a matrix favorable for microbial colonization and growth. Treatment of the sorbed contaminants is further accomplished through sulfate enhanced bioremediation.

NutriBind™ information can be found by clicking here.

TersOx™ - this product is a unique calcium peroxide mix that produces a controlled-release of molecular oxygen designed to assist in the aerobic bioremediation of hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater. TersOx™ stimulates natural degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX). This is not a chemical oxidation product. The high ratio of O2 in TersOx™ (>16% w/w) provides a long-term oxygen source for up to 12 months upon hydration under ideal conditions. This sustained release of oxygen stimulates indigenous bacteria, accelerates bioactivity, and promotes increased contaminant removal.

TersOx™ information can be found by clicking here.

2016 Barry Inglis Medal Awarded to the RemScan Development Team

Professor Mike McLaughlin from the CSIRO has won the prestigious 2016 Barry Inglis Medal presented by the National Measurement Institute (NMI) in Australia. The medal was officially awarded in October 2016 in recognition of the innovation development of RemScan, a handheld infrared instrument for the rapid measurement of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants in soil.

Dr Richard Stewart, Managing Director of Ziltek, said “this is a major achievement for the RemScan development team including CSIRO, Agilent and Ziltek. It is a classic example of how innovative technology start-up's can work together with academic and multi-nationals to bring innovative products to the world market".
